I don't have to tell you that running the Human Resources department of a small or mid-sized company can keep you busy. Between hiring new employees, workplace conflict management, employee internet addiction, sexual harassment, health and wellness in the workplace and a myriad of other issues, it can be quite a "challenge" ...
If you're a small business you might be wearing many hats. You might not have the time to make sure that your HR dept is functioning properly. Even if your company is mid sized or larger, and has a dedicated HR Department, it still doesn't change the fact that ...
HR Done Wrong Can Be a Real Pain!
These are Just A Few Of The Many Issues
Your Company May Be Experiencing ..
Recruiting and Hiring - This is the process that most people think of when they think of HR. The interview and selection process is often a minefield of questions that you can ask and can’t ask. Ask the right questions and you will recruit the right employees. Ask the wrong questions and not only will you get the wrong employees .. you may be in for a lawsuit! Don't worry, it doesn't have to be hard to do it right ...and legally!.
Employee Turnover and Retention - Employee Turnover is Expensive. Not only in having key positions vacant but in recruiting costs and productivity as well. What can you do to keep your employees from leaving? The answers may be different than you think. An employee retention program that is specific to your company issues can make a huge difference in your bottom line
Employee Communication / Morale - The “rumor mill” can have a powerful influence on the attitude of your employees. Your employees hear a lot of information about the company, but is it accurate and is it what you want them to hear? A communication strategy that is informative and motivating can compete and beat the rumor mills.
Training and Coaching of Managers - Your company is growing and changing, but your managers are struggling to help push your company to the next level. Maybe you don't have enough mangers, maybe you have too many. What can you do to assist your managers to handle the demands of change and a growing employee base?
Managing Change in the Workplace - If you don't change with the times you'll get left in the dust. Change requires training, retooling ... and maybe new hires. Staying ahead of the curve without upsetting the status quo can be quite a balancing act ...
Maybe You Are Facing These 5 Minefields ...
I call them The Terrible 5!
Internet Addiction and The Work Place - 15 years ago you didn't have to worry about this. Now it's a huge problem. Employees are spending more and more time surfing the Internet when they should be working. This results in an extreme lack of productivity. The Good News? It can be controlled ...if you know how.
Health and Wellness in the Workplace - If they're not surfing the Internet they're calling in sick. Deadlines Slip ... Clients are disappointed ... Profitability is Affected. There are things that you can do to assure that you will have healthier, and happier employees. We'll talk more about that later ...
Work place Sexual Harassment - I don't even have to tell you what kind of powder keg this can be.. He said this ...She said that ... Legalities and Lawsuits. It can be a nightmare. By fostering an environment of mutual respect between the sexes and having an open door policy for reporting these issues, problems can be avoided before they get out of hand.
Human Resources and Hiring minorities - Another powder keg ... if done incorrectly. We are living in a modern age. If you look at a persons race, creed, or religion when making a hiring decision you're not only doing your company a disservice ... you're asking for a lawsuit!
Workplace Conflict management - A lot of issues can be summarized into the category of "Workplace conflict management." Employees are people ... people have different personalities .... people sometimes don't get along with other people. Whenever you have a large group of people in close quarters (your office) some are not going to get along. Handled properly it doesn't have to be a problem!

Most Of These Problems and More ...

We were in the middle of an expansion. Our company had just been taken over by a large public company. They wanted us to grow. This required the hiring of more employees ...
The right employees.
We had tried all the usual channels ... Employment Web sites ... Recruiting Firms ... We even placed our own ads in the newspaper! (What a nightmare that was!)
We just couldn't find the kind of employees we were looking for ...
As this flurry of hiring activity (or should I say attempted hiring activity) was going on there was a bit of an employee morale problem. People were worried.
Would there be layoffs? Longer hours? More responsibilities?
What was going to change?
I had to juggle the hiring of new employees with the implementation of changes requested by the new parent company. I also had to calm the fears of our current employees. This, combined with my normal day to day HR stuff was driving me crazy ...

I Wasn't Expecting The Call ...
I told my friend Mary about the problems I was having. Mary told me about a friend that she had met at the gym. She told me that this person was some kind of miracle worker when it came to business ... HR Issues specifically.
The woman's name was Kathi Guiney.
Although I'm very good at what I do, I knew I was over my head ... I needed help! My boss was after me to hire 35 new employees .. I was having trouble finding one! In addition I had to deal with all the employee morale issues ...
I wasn't having fun.
I asked Mary to give Kathi my phone number. I proceeded to go back to my day to day treadmill of activity ... very little being was being accomplished. I totally forgot about Kathi Guiney.
Two days later at a little after 11:00 am (11:17 to be exact) the phone rang ...
A very pleasant voice on the line said ...
"Hi This Is Kathi Guiney ... I Hear You
Are Having Some HR Issues"
I burst out laughing. I guess all the frustration was built up in me and it was either laugh ... or cry!
Saying we were having some "HR Issues" is like saying Bill Gates and Donald Trump "have a little extra money laying around" ... It was the understatement of the year!
When I told Kathi this she laughed too. Then we started chatting ...
She asked me about what was going on and I told her all the problems. All the frustration I had gone through. It felt really good to tell somebody else about it and get it off my chest .
I told her ...
-
How One Guy left for lunch one day and never came back
-
That 3 brand new employees had quit before we finished training them
-
That many of our current employees were worried about their jobs
-
About the guy who tells "inappropriate" jokes in front of female co-workers
-
How we just couldn't find the right employees for our company
(Any of these issues sound familiar?)
And Then Kathi Said ...
You Call Those Problems?
We laughed again .. I really liked her! I knew that although she realized we did have serious problems she was confident that she could handle them. This made me feel a lot better about the situation and gave me hope that with Kathi's help we could pull it off ...
We spoke about various HR Issues such as Non-Monetary rewards in the workplace, what to do to stop workplace gossip, employee motivation programs, and much more. I told her about a corporate event idea that I had ... she told me about some employee theft case studies she had done ...
I felt like I had known her all my life. Although she had a lot more experience then I did she treated me as an equal ...We were just two HR professionals sharing war stories. It was a very comforting feeling to have somebody like Kathi in my corner ...
But Then a Feeling Of Dread Came Over Me ...
I had to go talk to my boss. My boss was is one of the most change resistant people I know. I remember when I wanted to buy copy paper from a new company ... he threw a fit. Now I had to go tell him about Kathi and how were were going to totally change the way we were doing things ...
This wasn't going to be fun.
I told Kathi my concerns and she suggested I that I take a look at her web site to learn more about what she does. She said there was a bunch of case studies and testimonials on the site. If I was going to sell this idea to my boss I would need to have some ammunition ...
So I Went To Kathi's Web Site
And Here's What I Saw ...

My Boss Is Very Skeptical ...
I knew that he would be impressed by the testimonials.
But it was going to take more than that to convince him ... He was going to want to see examples of work that Kathi had done, success stories ... case studies. So I poked around the web site a little more and lo and behold here's what I found ...
Case Study #1
(Do You Have a Deadline Looming?) |
Kathi puts together a streamlined recruiting process to meet a project deadline
Situation: A “new business” division of a publicly traded financial services company, needed to ramp up their hiring, quickly, to meet a project deadline. In the span of 45 days 15 accounting professionals needed to be hired.
Solution: A detailed recruiting plan was developed that defined the target candidate and took advantage of local referrals, and advertising. A multi-stage interview process was designed that shortened the hiring decision process and reduced the number of visits each candidate had to make to the company.
Results: The positions were filled within the deadline and some of the new hires liked the streamlined focused process so well they provided valuable referrals to other great candidates! |
Case Study #2
(Is Your Company Thinking of Relocating?) |
Kathi helps increase employee retention prior to company relocation
Situation: A privately held manufacturing company was moving offices and production out of state. Those employees who chose not to relocate had to be motivated to produce at a high level through their termination date.
Solution: Performance based incentives were developed that were specific to job duties and responsibilities and tied to meeting the business plan. A communication plan was implemented to let the employees know how they were doing against their incentive metrics.
Results: Employee turnover prior to the shutdown of offices was minimal and the business plan was met. As an added result some new business was developed due to a high level of customer service! |
Case Study #3
(Is Your Company Involved In A Merger?) |
Kathi helps a merger between two service industry companies go smoothly
Situation: A merger was occurring between two service industry companies, one privately held one publicly traded, and there were many duplicate employee positions and offices locations. There needed to be a consolidation and integration of employees and office locations.
Solution: A chart was designed to identify overlap office locations. A team was established to work through the issues identified such as space, commuting distance of employees and lease issues etc. A talent selection matrix was developed to drive the discussion on the integration of employees. A comprehensive interview process involving management from both companies was established to make the talent selections.
Results: The merger was completed with minimal disruption to productivity and the resulting new company was a balanced blend of talent from both companies |
So Now Came The Moment Of Truth ...
After looking at Kathi's site I was confident that she was the person who could help us. I felt comfortable sending my boss to the site. I went into his office and told him that I had found somebody who could help turn our HR Department around ...
He said "I thought that was Your Job!"
I said "Yes it is my job, but with the expansion and everything else going on I need some help". He reluctantly agreed so I told him to take a look at Kathi's site. He said "Ok give me a few minutes and I'll take a look" ...
30 Minutes went by, An Hour Went by, Two Hours Went By ...
Finally ...
He Called Me Into His Office
With A Stern Look On His Face ...
I walked into the office and sat down. He looked at me for a few seconds and there was an uncomfortable silence. Then he Spoke; "Well I Looked at the website. You know that we're trying to keep expenses down right?"
I said "Yes I know but. I think Kathi would be a smart investment for our company. We're wasting a lot of time and money on trying to find good employees and then training them. We also have a lot of other HR issues. I have spoken to Kathi at length and we really hit it off. I thing the two of us working together can really turn things around" ...
I was trying to convince him to hire Kathi when he stopped me. I just got off the phone with Kathi, you didn't think it took me two hours to look at a website did you?" "So what do you think" I asked. Once again he had a serious look on his face ... but then he broke out in a wide smile and said ...
You're A Genius! ... When Can We Hire Her?
We brought Kathi aboard as a consultant. She was even better than we thought. That first week we hired 3 new employees that she recommended .... they're still working here to this day! She also helped us fill several of our other positions. Many of them are still with us now as well.
Not only did she help us bring some great employees aboard, she also helped us in other areas. We now have a whole set of polices in place that help use deal with such issues as sexual harassment, conflict management, internet addiction in the work place and much more
And to think ... it all began with that simple phone call at 11:17 a.m.
So what about you? Are you ready to see what Kathi can do for YOUR company?
