Want to Create the Best You? Clean Out These Five Behaviors.
Last week, our blog looked at ways to clean up your office for spring. What do you have, what should you keep, and what can you get rid of to improve your office function? In a fun and challenging twist, you can apply this same process to your work personality—sort of a spring cleaning for your professional persona.
To create the best version of you, lose these five behaviors:
- Inability to tune out distractions. As many offices turn to open, collaborative environments, this one just gets tougher and tougher. You can turn to your trusty earbuds or, if you’re lucky, that office meant as a retreat space. But then there’s still an endless stream of Instagram posts, text messages, or hallway chats about the latest twist on This Is Us. Whether it’s hiding your phone or staying in the zone, what strategies can you implement to keep distractions to a minimum?
- Destructive perfectionism. Nobody is perfect, but darned if that doesn’t stop some of us from trying. When we keep in mind the 80/20 rule, spending more time and energy to produce perfect work is actually counterproductive. Is it more important to squeeze perfection out of that project, or would you do better tackling other items on your to-do list?
- Lacking a to-do list. What?! You don’t have a to-do list? You might do OK flying by the seat of your pants, but how much more productive could your days be if each one came with a list of priorities organized into achievable steps and goals? Start keeping track of what needs to get done today and how much time you’re allotting to each project (the timed portion will also help you push past perfectionism). With a game plan and a play clock, you’re more likely to hit your daily goals.
- Habitual lateness. You may think no one notices when you waltz in 15 minutes late in the morning or take an extra half-hour for lunch. But people do, and it can impact not only your reputation, but your personal productivity. Whether you’re arriving at a meeting or your desk first thing in the morning, responsible professionals show up on time! Plus you don’t want to sabotage your mindset or your day’s productivity by starting the day in a time deficit.
- Not taking breaks. Meal and rest breaks are built into your day for a reason! Some days, your work “flow” might be so amazing that you don’t want to interrupt it, but most days, your brain could stand to step away from the chaos. Breaks refresh your body and mind, making you more productive and ready to tackle those next steps on your to-do list. Try building daily reminders into your phone or calendar.

Layoffs are hard on everyone. Even as business leaders and HR professionals, layoffs are one of the hardest things we have to do. Resolve conflict like a champ
We’re hard-pressed to say conflict resolution is a fun or glamorous part of a Human Resources or leadership role, but it’s one of the most critical parts. How you mediate conflict impacts employee morale and retention, and also shows your leadership abilities and your willingness to tackle the tough stuff. Your conflict resolution skills can […]
Stop! and hire this candidate
It’s easy to criticize potential hires and spot reasons why we shouldn’t hire them. That one is too arrogant, that one lacks technical skills, and that one knows nothing about the company. Process of elimination, right? But too often we fail to recognize the positive reasons why we should hire someone. Positive flags can be […]
