How to Write an Eye-Catching Job Posting
How boring are your job postings? While it’s true that your job postings should be informative in all the right ways, you don’t want them to read like the 1980s classified ads. They should be inspiring and intriguing enough to actually attract talent, and they can do this by highlighting what modern job-seekers want: personality and culture, salary and benefits, and a place for them in the future.
Personality and Culture
“Seeking receptionist for mid-size law firm. Must have good phone skills.” It’s descriptive, but it makes your company sound like Snoozeville. You want to keep your job postings professional, but you also want to use language that reflects your company’s culture (and isn’t totally boring). Are you friendly, relaxed, fun? Share a bit about your company, why it’s a great place to work, and why this position offers such a great opportunity. What words or titles can you use that are unique to your company (Director of First Impressions, Administrative Ninja)? Entice candidates who are like-minded and who will mesh well.
Salary and Benefits
If your company has a defined salary range for this position, include it in the job posting. Including the salary range saves time and heartache by attracting candidates willing to accept the offered wage. When you talk about benefits, remember that you’re also touting total compensation, work-life balance, and a mission that aligns with potential job candidates’ sensibilities. What does your company do to make the work experience more enjoyable? Do you offer special benefits like flex schedules, on-site childcare, sabbaticals, or gym memberships? How does your company give back to the community?
Future Opportunities and Growth
Thinking about a new job often means thinking about the future, or at least the next steps on the path. Let your posting show that this position isn’t a dead end—that you’re proactively thinking about the next steps for this employee, too. Talk about the long-term goals for the position. Share the company’s professional development options, such as mentorship and coaching, training opportunities, and tuition reimbursement. You could also share the average time until employees reach the next level in the department.
In Conclusion: How to Write an Eye-Catching Job Posting
Remember that the hiring process involves people, not robots! Show some personality that’s true to your culture, then share what’s amazing about your company, and you’ll attract like-minded candidates more likely to stay for the long haul.

Stop! and hire this candidate
It’s easy to criticize potential hires and spot reasons why we shouldn’t hire them. That one is too arrogant, that one lacks technical skills, and that one knows nothing about the company. Process of elimination, right? But too often we fail to recognize the positive reasons why we should hire someone. Positive flags can be […]
