Develop These Marketable Soft Skills Now

We’ve often said how stellar soft skills propel good leaders into great leaders—skills like communication, delegation, and teamwork, which will help you work better with your team. Some soft skills might come easily to you, while you might have to work at others. For those skills you haven’t quite mastered yet, now is the perfect time to work on them, to develop your professional skillset and secure a stronger position in tomorrow’s workplace.

So what are the highest priority, most marketable soft skills you can master right now to turn yourself into a great (or even greater!) leader?

Empathy fosters communication

Great leaders have emotional intelligence: the ability to understand and manage their own emotions as well as the emotions of others. Empathy and social skills are a big part of this. These skills are important to balance the stress, anxiety, and uncertainty of employees with understanding, hope, and stability. Encourage your team members to come to you with questions or concerns, and try to get ahead of anxieties with comforting words and insights.

Collaboration strengthens teams

We’re all separate yet oddly more together than ever during this time. Fostering your team’s collaborative spirit, encouraging cross-functional teamwork, and just generally encouraging everyone to support one another will go a long way toward bolstering productivity, motivation, and creativity.

Honesty builds credibility

Now more than ever, your team will look to you for an honest take on the state of business. You can use honesty to strengthen trust and communication, or you can destroy it by hiding information and dancing around questions. Just remember, nobody will trust you if you are sketchy! Share what facts you can, when you are able to share them. If you’re not able to share something, or if you don’t know an answer, say so. Your team will appreciate your transparency.

Adaptability encourages success

We’re facing changes in our work hours, our work environments, and in many cases, in our work itself. Now is not the time to be rigid or unforgiving! Successfully adapting to change starts with an open mind, and successfully leading others requires a willingness to embrace and champion that change. What are a few ways you can do things differently? What are several strategies to tackle a problem? If something isn’t working anymore, how can you pivot?

Resolve conflict like a champ

We’re hard-pressed to say conflict resolution is a fun or glamorous part of a Human Resources or leadership role, but it’s one of the most critical parts. How you mediate conflict impacts employee morale and retention, and also shows your leadership abilities and your willingness to tackle the tough stuff. Your conflict resolution skills can […]

Stop! and hire this candidate

It’s easy to criticize potential hires and spot reasons why we shouldn’t hire them. That one is too arrogant, that one lacks technical skills, and that one knows nothing about the company. Process of elimination, right? But too often we fail to recognize the positive reasons why we should hire someone. Positive flags can be […]
