Say YES! to Candidate Care

When it comes to hiring new talent, as recruiters and HR professionals, we’re not just seat-fillers, we’re caregivers. We should be caring for our job candidates at every step of the hiring process, with the idea that happy candidates will become happy employees. After all, an unpleasant onboarding will only create a bad (and lasting) first impression. These tips can help improve candidate care during the hiring process.

Communication Throughout

Keeping regular contact with candidates ensures everyone is current on any changes to the job situation, on either side. A proactive recruiter can also notify candidates of other jobs they might want to apply for. Regular (but not overbearing) communication fosters positive feelings about your company and its hiring process, and the value it places on even its potential employees.

And a word about ghosting: So many companies are still choosing to ghost candidates they have decided not to hire, yet these same companies act shocked when candidates ghost recruiters! (It doesn’t feel good, does it?) A simple “thank you but I/we have decided on a different direction” email costs nothing—to recruiter or candidate—but can mean everything to brand perception.

Pre-Hire & Interview

Out of the entire hiring process, candidates tend to be most intimidated by the interview (yes, even above salary negotiations!). Stay close to candidates who are scheduling interviews: tell them who they’ll be meeting with, clue in to any unconventional interview dress codes, and share how long the interview is expected to last.

Post-Hire

Caregiving doesn’t stop once a candidate has been hired. Check in with them! Make sure they are happy with preparations prior to starting their new job, and let them know you are available to answer any questions. Welcome them on their first day. Touch base after a while to see how they are settling in. You may be able to get ahead of any doubts or concerns that surface, to help the new employee feel more at ease. Always keep a positive attitude about how happy the company is to have them on the team.

In Conclusion

Your company will never lose out when you treat a candidate with respect and value, and when you keep communication open at all times. You can easily turn your job candidates into shining brand ambassadors, if not happy future employees—plus you never know when you may cross paths again!

Resolve conflict like a champ

We’re hard-pressed to say conflict resolution is a fun or glamorous part of a Human Resources or leadership role, but it’s one of the most critical parts. How you mediate conflict impacts employee morale and retention, and also shows your leadership abilities and your willingness to tackle the tough stuff. Your conflict resolution skills can […]

Stop! and hire this candidate

It’s easy to criticize potential hires and spot reasons why we shouldn’t hire them. That one is too arrogant, that one lacks technical skills, and that one knows nothing about the company. Process of elimination, right? But too often we fail to recognize the positive reasons why we should hire someone. Positive flags can be […]
