What’s in a Great Remote Worker’s Resume?

Hiring remote workers? Even if you live in a state that has reopened some or all of its office space to in-person work, remote work isn’t going away anytime soon. The good news is, we’ve all had time to get better at working remotely, and for those of us HR professionals and hiring managers, we’ve had time to learn what to look for in successful remote candidates. When technical skills are the same, soft skills will make all the difference. So what do these look like, exactly?

Organization and time management

There’s no boss to pop into a remote worker’s office. Without standard supervision, a remote worker has to be able to manage their own projects and deadlines. How does this translate to a resume? A remote worker’s resume should show organization, both in form and thought. Is the resume easy to follow?

Independent work

Some folks are extroverts, some are introverts; some thrive in teams, and some excel alone. A successful remote candidate has to be able (and content) to work alone. What jobs and projects in the remote worker’s resume demonstrate independent work?

Problem-solving skills

Whether a technology snag, an unhappy customer, or a potential missed deadline, stuff happens, especially when workers are alone. They need the drive and resourcefulness to solve any problems that arise, or to know when and how to seek out help, knowing assistance may not be readily available. Look for trustworthy independent judgment in the resume, and then validate in the interview.

Attention to detail

“I want too work four you’re company.” …probably not the attention to detail you’re looking for in a remote worker. Attention to detail is one of the most important soft skills because it impacts quality of work. From communication, to time management, to analytics—you name it, details matter. Mistakes are costly, so look for a candidate whose resume is not rife with typos or incomplete thoughts. (They did get their email address correct, right?)

Passion and enthusiasm

No one will be more motivated or eager than a worker who loves their job. It’s the fire from within that drives people to greatness! Passion and enthusiasm might not be so obvious in a bulleted resume, so—curveball!—turn to the cover letter for clues. Does the candidate sound excited about your company and the work they do?

By knowing what skills to look for in a resume, you’ll be sure to choose a thriving remote candidate!

Resolve conflict like a champ

We’re hard-pressed to say conflict resolution is a fun or glamorous part of a Human Resources or leadership role, but it’s one of the most critical parts. How you mediate conflict impacts employee morale and retention, and also shows your leadership abilities and your willingness to tackle the tough stuff. Your conflict resolution skills can […]

Stop! and hire this candidate

It’s easy to criticize potential hires and spot reasons why we shouldn’t hire them. That one is too arrogant, that one lacks technical skills, and that one knows nothing about the company. Process of elimination, right? But too often we fail to recognize the positive reasons why we should hire someone. Positive flags can be […]
