How to Know You’ve Found THE ONE (You’re Going to Hire)

It’s easy to spot red flags in aspiring employees—they’re late, nonresponsive, poorly spoken, and so on—that mean it’s time to cut a candidate out of the hiring process. But what about the green flags that mean GO for a candidate? What can you look for to recognize when a candidate is “the one”?

They’re knowledgeable

It’s obvious they’ve done their research on the position and the company. They know what to expect and they are excited about it, often making them a better cultural fit than someone who didn’t do their research. Do they ask you a question about your latest product launch? Did they have an informational interview with someone at your company? Are they familiar with the company’s mission statement? All this demonstrates interest in this job and this company, making your company feel less like the candidate’s hundredth job application this week.

They’re enthusiastic

Enthusiasm likely goes hand in hand with company research; an applicant who is enthusiastic about the job will have done their homework. But that’s not all—their enthusiasm will burst through in their body language and their speech. Are they smiling? Do they sound excited? Enthusiasm! That person wants to work with you!

They’re communicative

Throughout the hiring process, this candidate got back to you quickly with exactly the information you needed—and they did it while sounding competent. Clear and prompt communication is important in any workplace, so kudos if your candidate already has these down.

They’re honest

Even “the one” isn’t perfect, although they may be perfect for you. Half the battle here is, will your candidate own their imperfections? Self-awareness is critical to an employee’s starting skillset and growth potential. Can the applicant candidly discuss their weaknesses and past mistakes, or are they the type to say they have none?

They had an amazing interview

A candidate who brings a truly awesome interview—one that is an easy back and forth, like a conversation—is a candidate worth recognizing. Their answers might have even driven the next questions. Did both interviewer and interviewee feel great afterward, like all was in sync and you’re already looking forward to working together? This is a good sign!

You know you’ve found “the one” when…

…all of the above comes together in one knowledgeable, honest, enthusiastic, and communicative person you would be proud to work with. You might not even be able to put your finger on exactly what makes this candidate click so well, but you know it was meant to be. Now draft up that offer letter!

Resolve conflict like a champ

We’re hard-pressed to say conflict resolution is a fun or glamorous part of a Human Resources or leadership role, but it’s one of the most critical parts. Stop! and hire this candidate

It’s easy to criticize potential hires and spot reasons why we shouldn’t hire them. That one is too arrogant, that one lacks technical skills, and that one knows nothing about the company. Process of elimination, right? But too often we fail to recognize the positive reasons why we should hire someone. Positive flags can be […]
