As you continue on your journey, remember what got you to this level—your insight, your relevance, and your ability to ask great questions to keep yourself at your sharpest. And did you know that some of the best questions are the ones you ask yourself? Whether you’re heading a company, guiding a startup, or simply leading a team, staying aware of your personal development can help you grow as a leader. You can get the most from your workdays and stay on the path to success if at the end of each day you ask yourself these seven questions.

  1. What did I accomplish? Pat yourself on the back for the great things you did today—you earned it! Not only does reviewing your achievements keep you productive and positive, it can help you stay aligned with your goals.
  2. Did I take steps toward my goals? Whether a goal relates to a short-term project or a long-term vision, keeping sight of your goals can keep you organized and motivated. What’s better, your goals work to keep your team focused and the work flowing.
  3. What motivated me? Your team knows when you are motivated or when you are complacent, and they will feed off your energy. To fuel your drive to achieve, produce, and develop in the workplace, take stock of what motivates you to be your best. Draw on these motivators when you feel your enthusiasm slipping.
  4. What can I learn from the mistakes I made? Great leaders learn from their failures as much as from their successes. So think about where you stumbled today, own your mistakes, and consider what you could do differently next time.
  5. Did I help my team members succeed today? Your team will look to you for knowledge and support regarding their work projects and their professional development. Be aware of your team members’ career goals and provide a daily opportunity for them to grow, whether it’s talking over lunch, training on a new program or skill, or offering useful feedback about progress or performance. Ask them how you can help them today or if they have any questions they’d like to ask you.
  6. Did I behave in a way I am proud of? You can own the world, but if you’re not happy with who you had to become to get there, was the sacrifice worth it? So ask yourself if you acted in line with your personal beliefs today. People will respect good character and integrity—and those qualities can shine in any role or industry.
  7. What am I thankful for? Through good days or bad days, an attitude of gratitude can help you stay focused on the things that matter. Walking away grateful for even one thing that happened today will help you keep a positive outlook on your career, and will get you ready to tackle the new day tomorrow.
