Tips for Recent College Grads to Find a Job
While recent college grads with jobs are spending their summers looking for love, recent college grads without jobs are spending their summers looking for work. And that’s a full-time job in itself (or it should be!)—reporting to the Internet at sunup to network, search career sites, and submit applications. A thorough job search often takes some time and leads down unexpected paths, where the twists and turns can be as frustrating as they are exciting. After all, that next great job opportunity could be just around the corner!
To make the most of your job-search journey this summer, you’ll need:
- An efficient job search. Is it possible to cast a wide yet efficient net? It is if you first determine the goals of your job search. Is it “do or die” to a particular industry, set of responsibilities, or starting salary, or are you flexible? Would you be happy accepting a passable, if not ideal, job? Decide which of your goals are most crucial, then focus on entry-level jobs that 1) meet those goals and that 2) you are qualified to do. You may find that a bottom-tier position in your dream industry is the best choice—like starting in the mail room of a big-time publishing company.
- A tailored resume. Circulating resumes is your job for now, so don’t cut corners! Tailor each and every resume and cover letter you send out (you are sending cover letters, right?). Use key words in the job posting to highlight skills and achievements in your application. Also be sure to visit each company’s website and social media profiles, as you can often find details to include with your application, even if only the reasons you want to work there. As you continue your job search, revise your resume to address any questions raised by interviewers or recruiters.
- A killer interview ensemble. Nothing says, “I’m ready to tackle the career world” like a polished and professional suit. If you don’t own a suit, consider dipping into your savings or graduation money to get one; a classic cut in a neutral color is a lasting investment in your future.
- Realistic expectations. Accepting a less desirable job may be humbling, but it is part of keeping realistic expectations for your job search. As a recent college graduate, your experience is likely limited and the competition is fierce, so it’s realistic to think your dream job may be outside your reach for now. But it’s only for now. You’ll have the rest of your career to work toward your dream, becoming a consummate professional who is sure to impress when the perfect opportunity presents itself. Plus you never know when that “only for now” job might lead somewhere amazing.

Resolve conflict like a champ
We’re hard-pressed to say conflict resolution is a fun or glamorous part of a Human Resources or leadership role, but it’s one of the most critical parts. Stop! and hire this candidate
It’s easy to criticize potential hires and spot reasons why we shouldn’t hire them. That one is too arrogant, that one lacks technical skills, and that one knows nothing about the company. Process of elimination, right? But too often we fail to recognize the positive reasons why we should hire someone. Positive flags can be […]
