How to Effectively Manage a Remote Team
Nobody said it would be easy to manage a team that works from their homes, in different states, or even across the globe; it’s just going to be different. You’ll need to keep your team in the loop and tapped in, while still keeping tabs on their performance. And you’ll have to remember to do this for employees you don’t see every day. But through your leadership, you can manage a happy and productive remote team! Here’s how.
Collaborate
Remote employees should be included in all collaborative efforts, including shared project-management apps and communication platforms. A real-time collaboration app can keep remote employees in the loop on project status and progress by sharing relevant conversations and by following workflow and milestones.
Video Chat Your Meetings
FaceTime those staff meetings! (Yes, you have to wear pants.) If you have employees working in different time zones, just try not to schedule these meetings at 2am their time. Not only does video chat foster connection and camaraderie, popping the person off the page, but you as the manager get critical insight into an employee’s disposition and non-verbal communication. You can also use video chat to hold regular one-on-one meetings with your employees to establish communication, structure, and rapport.
Monitor Performance
Take the pulse of your remote employees’ progress and morale at regular intervals, lest it flatline. First, set clear expectations, including job-performance metrics and communication guidelines. Keep an eye on individual performance and team dynamics to see if tweaking is required. Make sure your remote employees are getting the support they need to do their jobs, and regularly solicit their feedback. Also offer your feedback to help streamline processes.
Make Time for Fun
You may not be able to meet for happy hour, but you can still bond over an online cocktail hour, online party games (jackbox, anyone?), or a chat forum dedicated to your beloved pets. Get to know each other by spending quality time outside of work.
In Conclusion
It takes dedication and a bit of effort to stay connected and productive without physical proximity, but you can certainly do it! Keep communicating, collaborating, and making time for the lighter things in life, and you’re sure to build a more happy and productive remote team.

Resolve conflict like a champ
We’re hard-pressed to say conflict resolution is a fun or glamorous part of a Human Resources or leadership role, but it’s one of the most critical parts. Stop! and hire this candidate
It’s easy to criticize potential hires and spot reasons why we shouldn’t hire them. That one is too arrogant, that one lacks technical skills, and that one knows nothing about the company. Process of elimination, right? But too often we fail to recognize the positive reasons why we should hire someone. Positive flags can be […]
