Make the Most of Your Last Day of Work
Few things feel stranger than your last day on the job. You’ve written a desk manual, passed off your projects, and are basically watching the minute hand so you can move on, right? What a waste! Here’s how you can use your last day to set up a better professional future.
- Make connections. Nurturing your network is one of the best things you can do for your career. So as you bid farewell to your supervisors and coworkers, especially to those who’ve made an impact on you or who have witnessed your best work, share your personal cell number and email address. Update your LinkedIn profile and extend invitations to connect with your peers. You’ll be able to make the most impact on your network before you walk out the door.
- Settle your balances. Are you owed anything beyond typical compensation—reimbursement for tuition, travel, conference registration, or that lunch you bought your team last week? Talk with the appropriate parties and arrange payment before you leave. It may be tough to recover your expenses later!
- Check your accounts and passwords. Make a list of any critical user accounts and passwords that your boss might need after you leave. Draw attention to any of your accounts that post publicly, as they should be transferred out of your name so “you” are not posting company events on Patch for the next three years. And be sure to turn in your company procurement card and settle any final expenses.
- Give an exit interview. Exit interviews are not always standard procedure; you may have to ask for one, especially if you work for a small company. But an exit interview can only benefit your replacement and the company’s future growth by helping your former employer understand why you’re leaving, what they were doing right, and what they could do to improve. You’ll look like a team player up to the very end.
Whatever the reason for your departure, be sure to neatly tie up all your loose ends and leave on a positive note, even if your experience wasn’t a great one. You never know when you might cross paths with these people again!

Resolve conflict like a champ
We’re hard-pressed to say conflict resolution is a fun or glamorous part of a Human Resources or leadership role, but it’s one of the most critical parts. How you mediate conflict impacts employee morale and retention, and also shows your leadership abilities and your willingness to tackle the tough stuff. Your conflict resolution skills can […]
Stop! and hire this candidate
It’s easy to criticize potential hires and spot reasons why we shouldn’t hire them. That one is too arrogant, that one lacks technical skills, and that one knows nothing about the company. Process of elimination, right? But too often we fail to recognize the positive reasons why we should hire someone. Positive flags can be […]
