Stop! and hire this candidate
It’s easy to criticize potential hires and spot reasons why we shouldn’t hire them. That one is too arrogant, that one lacks technical skills, and that one knows nothing about the company. Process of elimination, right? But too often we fail to recognize the positive reasons why we should hire someone. Positive flags can be just as powerful, if not more powerful than, negative flags. So when you find this solid series of positive reasons to hire someone, stop and take a good, hard look.
Enthusiasm
It’s easy to say the right things to convey interest, but it’s the candidate’s delivery that’s worth watching. Is excitement in their voice? Do their eyes crinkle when they smile? This shows genuine interest in and passion for the company and/or the position. This is the kind of match you want—someone personally invested in this job and not just looking to pay the bills.
Communication
During the hiring and coordination process, look for candidates who respond quickly and thoroughly—these are the invested ones. During the interview, look for a smooth give-and-take. The candidate should intelligently answer your questions but may also offer additional information and ideas and should ask thoughtful questions of their own. The best interviews are more of a conversation than a Q&A session. If you feel like you’re clicking with the candidate and like you’d love to work with them, go forward!
Honesty
No candidate is perfect, but worth their weight in gold is a candidate who recognizes their weaknesses and who owns their mistakes and can share how they learned from them. This shows emotional intelligence, self-awareness, and agility to problem-solve—preferable to the candidate who admits only perfection.
Knowledge
This candidate knows about the company. They’ve done more than read the company’s About webpage: they’re up on the latest press and products, and they know something about the company’s culture and values. The well-researched candidate wants to make a career with the company, not make this job a mere pit stop on the path to another finish line.
In conclusion
When it comes to hiring the right candidate, a strong set of green flags can be just as telling as one or two red flags. So accentuate the positive and start looking for reasons to hire someone!
