Top Tips to Video Conferencing for Work

Are you using Zoom for meetings or even your latest job interview? If you’re using Zoom for work, it’s important to get your video conferencing etiquette down while maintaining a professional image. Here’s how.

Dress the Part

You wouldn’t show up to work with a wrinkled T-shirt and bedhead, even if you did just roll out of bed. The same goes for video conferencing. Business casual is a great look for your at-home workday, and if you’re sitting for an online interview, you can’t go wrong with proper interview attire. Just remember to avoid busy or tight patterns, which may look muddled on camera. Also remember to dress the entire part; just because your colleagues can only see you from the waist up doesn’t mean you should wear sweatpants. Don’t wear anything on camera that you’d be embarrassed to wear out of the house!

Position Your Body

Get the blood flowing for those early morning meetings! You may be more comfortable behind a table or desk, but what if you tried standing up (no sweatpants, right)? Standing during your video conference lets your body language flow more naturally and conversationally than if you were hunched over a table. Just be sure the camera isn’t pointed up your nose.

Prepare Your Environment

On video conference, your environment is front and center! Choose a quiet, well-lit room with lighting on the front of your face. It may be tough if you have kids or pets at home, but try to find a place without loud background noises or eerie echoes. If you have a guest bedroom or a dedicated home office, that’s perfect! Needless to say, the bathroom is not a good choice. But if you do get stuck somewhere unsightly, you can try one of Zoom’s virtual backgrounds. Also, good Zoom etiquette dictates you keep your audio muted unless you have something immediate to add.

Watch Where You’re Watching

It’s easy to forget that other video attendees can see you, like, all the time. Keep your eyes focused on the camera and the speaker’s video feed, resisting the urge to watch yourself. Not only will you appear fully engaged, but you’ll be able to better gauge their reactions and respond to the conversation—easier since everyone appreciates a savvy Zoom user!

Stop! and hire this candidate

It’s easy to criticize potential hires and spot reasons why we shouldn’t hire them. That one is too arrogant, that one lacks technical skills, and that one knows nothing about the company. Process of elimination, right? But too often we fail to recognize the positive reasons why we should hire someone. Positive flags can be […]
