What No One Will Tell You About Your Job

No one at your job is likely to reveal every juicy tidbit about your work environment. These are important things you will have to discover on your own, because your boss and coworkers won’t tell you!

Your reputation matters more than your work product

Are you consistent and friendly, or wishy-washy and unkind? How you are perceived can be more important than the work you do, and can be your selling point when it comes to special projects or promotions. To position yourself for the best opportunities, make sure you are viewed favorably.

You know your job best

No one knows your job better than you do, and other people—even your boss—may have no clue what your day-to-day looks like. Few bosses will admit the power you hold over your position, so you’ll want to loop them in on your daily activities and achievements to give them a better understanding of your value add.

Your job is a dead end

You’re a valuable asset the company doesn’t want to lose (or spend the time and money to replace), so you’ll never be told you can’t meet your professional goals there—you’ll have to figure that out on your own. Are employees around you moving up or sideways, or expanding their roles within the organization? What happened to the employees who did your job before you? If no one is moving, if employees are leaving in droves, or if there is no clear path to promotion for you, you’re probably in a dead-end job.

You need time for yourself

Remember, you’re a valuable asset who gets things done. No one is going to tell you to put your work on hold to take time for yourself, so you’ll have to spearhead your own time off. And notice if your boss (or anyone else) actually does tell you to take time away, which could be a sign you’re acting a little stressed.

Resolve conflict like a champ

We’re hard-pressed to say conflict resolution is a fun or glamorous part of a Human Resources or leadership role, but it’s one of the most critical parts. How you mediate conflict impacts employee morale and retention, and also shows your leadership abilities and your willingness to tackle the tough stuff. Your conflict resolution skills can […]

Stop! and hire this candidate

It’s easy to criticize potential hires and spot reasons why we shouldn’t hire them. That one is too arrogant, that one lacks technical skills, and that one knows nothing about the company. Process of elimination, right? But too often we fail to recognize the positive reasons why we should hire someone. Positive flags can be […]
