Why Is Communication So Important at Work?
Just like in your personal life, communication can make or break your career. When you communicate well in the workplace, you:
Build Relationships
When you interact with someone on a level beyond BAU, you show interest, you connect, and you build relationships. And solid relationships are one of the most useful tools you can wield in your career. Business relationships will impact the flow of your day-to-day, the size and quality of your network, and even the friendships you make. So why not learn to work well with others?
Show Transparency
Business transparency has been all the rage this last decade, and it’s not going anywhere anytime soon. Open communication creates greater transparency, which then builds loyalty and trust among employees, clients, and the public. As loyalty and trust increase, the transparency is likely to become, well, even more transparent. But that’s not a bad thing to invite the honesty and accountability that ensure quality and standards. So don’t be afraid to share your business’s data and decisions that will impact these groups.
Encourage Growth
When you’re a good communicator, you can land new clients and close deals. It’s like having a green thumb: it makes the difference between a business that is blooming and a business that is browning. Great communication from leadership also impacts workflow, because employees who are clear about their objectives can work easier. And when team members feel free to express themselves, better collaboration and increased productivity often follow.
Solve Problems
Stuff happens. How can you best solve a problem unless you openly (and tactfully) communicate about it? When you talk about and resolve problems when they arise, you’ll have fewer misunderstandings and hurt feelings that harm employee morale. You’ll also avoid any unpleasant surprises at performance review time.
What could you do to improve communication at work?

Resolve conflict like a champ
We’re hard-pressed to say conflict resolution is a fun or glamorous part of a Human Resources or leadership role, but it’s one of the most critical parts. How you mediate conflict impacts employee morale and retention, and also shows your leadership abilities and your willingness to tackle the tough stuff. Your conflict resolution skills can […]
Stop! and hire this candidate
It’s easy to criticize potential hires and spot reasons why we shouldn’t hire them. That one is too arrogant, that one lacks technical skills, and that one knows nothing about the company. Process of elimination, right? But too often we fail to recognize the positive reasons why we should hire someone. Positive flags can be […]
