You Know You Nailed the Interview When…

The uncertainty of a job search can induce as much anxiety as the process itself. Did your application get through the screening software? Did you fix that typo in your resume? Did this interviewer always have such a mean-looking face or did you say something wrong? Surely you prepared and did your best, right? Then it’s out of your hands and there’s no reason to stress by replaying the interview in your mind a thousand times. But you might be able to get clues to how the interview went if you noticed these indicators of a positive interview.

Your interview becomes a conversation

When an interview morphs into a more casual conversation, that’s a great indicator. Your answers are flowing well and your interviewers feel comfortable around you, see you can do the job, and would like to learn more about you.

Your time runneth over

When your interview runs long, as above, your interviewers are probably convinced you’d be a good fit and are enthusiastic to get to know you better. But remember that, due to scheduling conflicts, not everyone has the ability to let interviews go long. Also be mindful of any negative reasons interviews could run over time: Were your answers long and meandering? Did the interviewers have to repeat questions to get the answers they needed?

You hear verbal affirmations

Isn’t it great when interviewers tell you you’re awesome? At the end of an interview, you can fish for this answer with questions like, “What would your ideal candidate for this position look like?” or “Do you have any questions or concerns about me and my experience?” If you hear anything about how great a fit you’d be or that they’re looking for someone a lot like you, that’s a good sign, with bonus points for harkening back to something specific you said.

You see nonverbal affirmations

Not every interviewer will be so blunt of speech to tell you you’re amazing, but most interviewers will hint at their feelings with their body language. Look for head nods, genuine smiles or laughter, and small but positive sounds, like “mhmm.”

You get a glimpse of the future

You’re on the right track when the interviewer starts talking perks like benefits and vacation time (trying to sell you on the company), saying “after you start” instead of “if you’re selected,” and readily discussing next steps. Those are signs the interviewer can—and maybe already does—see you in this role.

If, while replaying your interview in your mind, you can recall any of these indicators that your interview was a good one, then replay away and hope for the offer!

Resolve conflict like a champ

How you mediate conflict impacts employee morale and retention, and also shows your leadership abilities and your willingness to tackle the tough stuff. Your conflict resolution skills can […]

Stop! and hire this candidate

It’s easy to criticize potential hires and spot reasons why we shouldn’t hire them. That one is too arrogant, that one lacks technical skills, and that one knows nothing about the company. Process of elimination, right? But too often we fail to recognize the positive reasons why we should hire someone. Positive flags can be […]
