2016: A Career Odyssey

Times they are a-changin’—and in 2016, jobs are a-changin’, too. According to CareerBuilder’s survey about New Year’s Resolutions at Work, one in five employees plans to land a new job in 2016. For Millennials and Post-Millennials, that number is closer to one in three. And if you’re one of these would-be job-seekers, now is the perfect time to seek new adventure as the job market picks up after the holidays.

So how can you begin your career odyssey in 2016?

  • Develop a vision. You can’t complete your journey unless you know where you want to go! And it all starts with the first step: discovering what your dream job looks like. What must change in your current situation to fulfill that dream (more money, better hours, different field)? Determining specifically what you want, and checking it against your personal skills and experience, will help you set and pursue realistic career goals.
  • Leverage SEO and social media. Is your LinkedIn profile sooooo 2015? Get in there and spruce things up, especially with a spin that will help you catch that dream job. Highlight career experience for where you want to go instead of where you’ve been. Boost your name’s search-engine results by weaving industry-specific keywords into your social media profiles and online portfolio. And finally, start following and interacting with the pages of companies you’d want to work for, so you can stay in the loop and get to know their company cultures.
  • Network, network, network. Get your business cards and elevator speech ready, because you never know who you’ll meet or where. (It’s called an elevator speech for a reason!) Freshen up current network connections and check in on older ones. To plant seeds, try discussing your career goals without mentioning you’re actively looking for work; you never know when a connection is also connected to your boss.
  • Keep it quiet. Best not to shout from the rooftops that you’re looking for work, especially if you want to stay at your current job while you search. That means not discussing your search with coworkers, and keeping your latest interview results off of social media. And even if you have a great working relationship with your boss, it’s probably best to stay mum until a prospect looks promising—like when you have a second interview or a job offer lined up. And never, ever, look for work during work hours. You never know who might be watching.

Layoffs are hard on everyone. Even as business leaders and HR professionals, layoffs are one of the hardest things we have to do. Resolve conflict like a champ

We’re hard-pressed to say conflict resolution is a fun or glamorous part of a Human Resources or leadership role, but it’s one of the most critical parts. How you mediate conflict impacts employee morale and retention, and also shows your leadership abilities and your willingness to tackle the tough stuff. Your conflict resolution skills can […]

Stop! and hire this candidate

It’s easy to criticize potential hires and spot reasons why we shouldn’t hire them. That one is too arrogant, that one lacks technical skills, and that one knows nothing about the company. Process of elimination, right? But too often we fail to recognize the positive reasons why we should hire someone. Positive flags can be […]
